Ancient Nomad
PART 5: Winter break

flag   Route Map    Rio San Juan to San Juan del Norte, Nicaragua   »  December 18, 2012

Another day, another adventure. Which I haven't really had that many so far. I've been moving so slowly, that at times it feels like I am living in Nicaragua instead of traveling. I am looking forward to seeing another place.

Rio San Juan to San Juan de Nicaragua - Nicaragua

Photo:  Rio San Juan, Nicaragua → 9 am. Soon boarding the panga for San Juan de Nicaragua. Just like this one, which is arriving. El Castillo is only about one third the way to the Carribean Coast. It will be a long but hopefully not to stressful 8 to 9 hours trip.

Photo:  Rio San Juan, Nicaragua → As I found out later, there are at least a couple boats leaving in the same direction. I think three. People get off along the way, and we change the boats. Finally, only one goes all the way to arrive at San Juan de Nicaragua.

Photo:  Rio San Juan, Nicaragua → The boats are filling up. My travel buddy Erik is chilling before the departure. There is nothing left now to do but wait.

Photo:  Rio San Juan, Nicaragua → Good bye El Castillo. Already after the rapids.

Photo:  Rio San Juan, Nicaragua → Our panga is almost empty. Lots of people got off in very remote places along the river.

Rio San Juan to San Juan de Nicaragua - Nicaragua

Photo:  Rio San Juan, Nicaragua → We arrived late, too many stops, especially the annoying military check points. The last was the worst - checking bags, asking for passports, too much time spent on this again. There was nothing really to take photos of, except this meal already in San Juan del Nicaragua. Fresh water shrimps done with lots of garlic. They were delicious.

So, my trip to San Juan was a success. Not the most amazing boat trip as advertised, but I have seen some birds along the way, and one quite big cayman floating a a large chink of driftwood. Also, there was a flying over the boat tucan, very colorful, and a huge kind of dry looking tree full of howler monkies. Other than that, I'd say quite monotonious with the annoying military check points. But once in a life time, why not. Hopefully I will be able to make it from here to Bluefields.
