PART 3: Back on the road - South East Asia.

I flew to Hong Kong from Bangkok. Not a long flight of about 2 hours and 30 minutes. The cost - 180 dollars.
![]() Photo: Bangkok, Thailand → My last meal in Thailand - the very tender and delicious pork meat with rice. It reminds me of Polish 'golonka'. Oh, I'd love to have that! With mustard or horseradish, cabbage and fresh Polish bread or potatoes. Hey - I found yet another reason to visit Poland! ![]() Photo: Bangkok, Thailand → The Bangkok airport is huge, and my gate 'D something 'was quite far away. Leaving the security check there is this display of mythical powers struggle. The sculpture depicts some creatures pulling a snake. Many Chinese tourists flying to Hong Kong were taking photos, and so did I. I have seen similar motives in Angkor, Cambodia, but the sculptures there were centuries old so this one gave me an idea of how they might have had originally looked like. It was quite interesting to see them in color. Thailand and Cambodia - often disputing, so I wonder about this connections. ![]() Photo: Bangkok, Thailand → . ![]() Photo: Bangkok, Thailand → The snake is wrapped around a rock which sits on a turtle. ![]() Photo:

The night at the airport was smooth and I am ready to follow up on my plans.
Finally - Hong Kong. Not the mainland yet, and not the typical 'real' China since Hong Kong has been run by the British for a long time, but
already definitely a different than Bangkok. Oh, I am so glad to be out of there...
![]() Photo: Hong Kong, China → On the bridge. ![]() Photo: Hong Kong, China → The first views of Hong Kong. Indeed, it seems like a big and modern city. ![]() Photo: Hong Kong, China → Quick snapshots of the city through the window of my bus. This is one of the older areas as I found out later, and it didn't prepare me for the ultramodern business district. ![]() Photo: Hong Kong, China → One of the main roads, Nathan Road, but not yet the Hong Kongs business district, where all is skyscrapers and new. But this is already it. I am on the way to Kowloong, where I found a bunch of the cheapest places for backpackers in Hong Kong. Close to the ferries, this area is also quite convenient. ![]() Photo: Hong Kong, China → Well, this is it. Still on the bus behind the same taxi, but I will be getting off very soon. This is Kowloon. I am staying at the Chungking Mansion on Nathan Road. It's a high rise building with hostels on many different floors. A bit of an infamous building because of some strange things which happened there in the past, apparently including even a murder or two, but I've heard it's OK now. It's not in this photo, but you can't miss it. There are always guys from India hanging around in front of the entrance, asking you if you need a room or a tailored suit. Yes, the whole building is basically run by the Indians. Finally in Hong Kong, with a place to sleep, I go for a walk. Continued here. |
