PART 3: Back on the road - South East Asia.
Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam, July 31, 2010 Another day in Bandar I went to see the suburbs, the wooden houses sitting on the river. Photo: Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. The path behind the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. It leads to the water villages on this side of the river. There are also more houses on the other side, and they make up an area called Kampung Ayer. Apparently, there are more than 20 villiages on both sides of the Sungai Brunei River, and they are considered one of the largest in the world. Photo: Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. Following the path. Photo: Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. School and children. Photo: Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. It turned out these children were not going to school at this time. Photo: Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. The main path is quite long and it goes all the way through the village. Photo: Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. There was a sort of like a bridge along the way, which let me take a better look at the whole area. There is a mosque in the background. Photo: Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. A closer view at the houses and the path. Photo: Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. As the village sits on water there are no flowers blooming around, but the colorful loundry makes up for this. It's all in the shadow of the main mosque. I've heard that the city gave the people living in these villages an opportunity to relocate, but they didn't want to leave. I think this is their life style. Most of them are Malay. For sure, not everyone in Brunei is rich, but at least every person has free health care and education. Photo: Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. Kampung Ayer on the other side of the river. The mosque and the main waterway where the water taxis enter the village. Photo: Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. Kampung Ayer - another view. Photo: Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. In the city, the water taxis pick up customers along the canal, which runs along one of the main streets. There is a market on the left, where they sell fruits and vegetables. Photo: Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. The market and boats loading and unloading passengers and goods.
