Ancient Nomad
PART 3: Back on the road - South East Asia.

flag   Route Map     Thun Song and Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand   »  October 01, 2010

The get to Nakhon Si Thammarat I first had to go to Thun Song. I didn't stay in Thun Song though, and I didn't take any photos of this town at this time. I will be passing through through it again on my way back and I will take a couple of snapshots then.

I will stay two nights in Nakhon Si Thammarat. The hotel was really cheap. A huge room, table, mirror, big bathroom, clean, and only 140 Baht. That's about 4.50 dollars. Not bad. I was looking for the Thai Hotel and found this one instead - ThaiLee Hotel. Thai Hotel is 260 Baht with TV and sofa, but I don't need it. It's very close to the Tourist Information office, on the same side of the road.

With one long main street, Nakhon Si Thammarat is easy to explore. The main attraction here is the biggest on the East Coast buddhist temple - Wat Phra Mahathat. It also the second tallest temple in Thailand. At the center of the temple is the 78 meters high chedi, surrounded by 173 smaller ones. Inside the base of the chedi are countless statues of Buddha and elephants, all covered with flakes of gold. The temple is very old and dates to 13 th century, when the city was founded. It is built based on style originating in Sri Lanka, and that's because local monks went there and came back with monks from Sri Lanka to develop new school of buddhism. The temple has been restored and is kept well maintained, so it does not have a rusty look. All is painted and up to date. The current chedi is built on top of an older one.

The Wat Phra Mahathat temple is about 2 kilometers walking distance from my hotel. The next day after arriving I went for a walk.

First, very close to my hotel, was this small but neat temple. I took a few photos to practice my photograpohy skills ;)

Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. Lots of reds and gold of course. These seem to be the dominant colors in Thai Buddhist temples.

     Nakhon Si Thammarat - Thailand
Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. A bit tacky for my taste, but still neat. It's all new, made recently, and I am used to the feel of the old Japanese temples - old aged wood, moss covered stones and sculptures, patina and rusty iron. So, while not really my style, I admire the effort they put into making these temples.

     Nakhon Si Thammarat - Thailand
Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. There are these weird statues of mystic warrior creatures on the temple ground. I am sure they have a place in the religion and Thai culture, but I don't know what it is. I am more interested in the visuals than the story. I am an artist.
