Ancient Nomad
PART 3: Back on the road - South East Asia.

Lovina, Bali, Indonesia, July 17, 2010

The past three days I have been exploring the Bali island on a scooter. It is really the best way to do it. Renting a scooter cost about $3.50 a day and the gasoline is half price comparing it to North America. It cost 4500 Rupiah per liter, which is about 50 cents. The roads are all right most of the time too, and the scenery is awesome!

At first, a few days ago, I went on a day trip to Ubud. I didn't really like Ubud. It's touristic. But taking the side roads I saw some pretty cool local houses of regular people. Then, I went on another day trip - to Padangban. It's a small place with fisherman and a ferry leaving for the Gili Islands (I wish I had the time to do it but I need to take care of the passport).

This time I left Kuta for five days. I drove along the East coast. Went to Padangban again, and then to Tulamben. The only purpose to stay in Tulamben is diving, and I did two dives there. One was the Liberty wreck from WWII, and the second dive at a site called 'Drop off', which pretty well describes it - a vertical in some places wall covered with corals and marine life. I think these two dives are pretty good. I saw lots of fish, but the highlight was a group of bump head fish. Greenish in color and massive. Also, on the second dive I saw Napoleon fish. Really cool.

After two nights in Tulamben I went on and arrived yesterday in Lovina. I stayed at a hotel right on the beach about 5 kilometers from the town. It's quiet and relaxing. Almost no people. Lovina, where I am sitting at a restaurant now, is again touristic. Much smaller than Kuta, but it has the beach, and a couple of intersections with restaurants. And no guessing there - the one I am at right now is filled only with white faces. Except me, haha, since these people are tourists on a vacation. The kind of dark skin I wear now is possible to get only when traveling like I do. Today one local women told me that from a distance she thought I was Indonesian!

This morning I went for a massage on the beach. Laying there, I thought about where I am and what I am doing. And it occurred to me that I am actually doing pretty good. I am not rich, actually I go broke once in a while, but I am living a swell life style which most other people can't enjoy. I am seeing exotic places, I eat exotic foods at restaurants, I see wild colors in nature and great remnants of the past others get to see only on TV or in a magazine. I dive, I take photos, I talk to locals and explore many cultures. I stay at hotels and I get a massage. Certainly, I can't complain. Of course, I am able to do it because I don't have what they do - their cars, condos, flat screen TV's, careers, hobbies, and all the rest I am glad I don't have. I am not attached to a place, and it makes me feel free. I feel like a citizen of the world, and the world is my home.
