PART 1: Escape from Vancouver freeze & the Mexico couch surfing experiment - Dec. 13 - Jan. 9 2010
Vancouver, Canada - January 08, 2010 Finally I am in Canada. I must say dealing with the Canadian border people was one of my two worst border crossing experiences of my entire life. There was absolutely no friendliness, not a trace of customer service. None ! Just cold, formal and basically abusive process. They asked me about 50 questions, some very tricky yet very stupid at the same time, and checked my small backpack like if I was trying to hide there an elephant. Nobody even asked me 'How are you ?' or 'Welcome to Canada !' - it would make such a big difference. Their job is to ask those questions and make funny requests to test you, but while doing this they should not forget that they are the first Canadians whom some people will see and this first experience will stay with them forever. The female who was checking my bag was especially horrible. She was making sarcastic comments and behaved like a hostile turd. She looked like an assassin. How about a smile ? Being treated like a criminal under suspicion just because I am crossing the border is out of line. Who says Canadians are friendly ? Not at the border ! Even to their own citizens. It's shaming the whole country, done in British Columbia. Before I was upset about how I was treated at the border when I was crossing it to the US. Now, as I see it, they were relaxed and we had a conversation. Stressful - sure, but they had to do their job, ask questions and be suspicious like the Canadians, but by comparison it wasn't so bad. Probably what made me upset at the time was that I was used to the border smooth border crossing between Canada and the US as it was some years back. I just wasn't getting why they would be making so much fuss. But times change, of course, and we are living in the post 9-11 era. This is not the 80's or 90's anymore. Now, comparing it to my 'Canadian experience', I would say that the treatment by the US officials was mild. I have no respect for the people whom I had to deal with on that day. Not much the guy, who was just formal, but especially the Canadian Maple Leaf wearing women. What a disgrace these people bring to the whole country and a bad image to many good Canadians. My life has always been about freedom and I shall continue to walk this path. Safe travels ! ........... Stan Check out my Photography Portfolio |
