Ancient Nomad
PART 3: Back on the road - South East Asia.

 flag  Kuantan, Malaysia   »  August 13, 2010

Two nights in Kuantan. I was thinking about staying here longer, but now, because of Ramadan, there is nothing happening in the city in daytime. There is a river front area, and a market with food, but that's at night. People don't eat until 7 pm, so my only chance for feed are some Indian stores or Chinese. Also, McDonalds and KFC.

There are other cities on my way, and I think I should finally get to see beaches and ocean. Again. I haven't see any blue water paradise in a while. It might wait until I reach North malaysia, but I will not see it unless I get there. So, two days is enough here.

The main attraction in this city is the mosque, which I read is the biggest on the East Coast.

     Kuantan - Malaysia
Photo: Kuantan, Malaysia. On the night when I arrived I went for a walk and snapped a photo of this Hindu temple. There were a couple women there talking and they were friendly and smiled when I was taking the photo (from the outside and behind the fence by the way, and entering it is not prohibited), but one middle aged guy started waving his arm like telling me to get away. I really think what's wrong and bad out there is a result of a choice - a person wants to be bad, or not. While some extreme situations in life might test it, and there can't be in my opinion judgment passed on people because most of the time easier to judge than say things based on the circumstances, but in my humble opinionion, most situations in life give enough space to a person to be one or the other. People just choose not to use that given time to think about it, and act rather compulsively to satusfy their need. Thie same thing with friendliness towards people. People forget that there are more uses for a smile than just when something is funny. Yes, when traveling you always have to reassess situations. Sometimes the best is just to leave, people or questions - unanswered.

Photo: Kuantan, Malaysia. I went to a Chinese place and had beef curry, rice, egg, dried fish, cucumber, and delicious chilli for dinner - 5 Ringgit, which is about 1.75 dollars.

Photo: Kuantan, Malaysia. A street. There are many streets which somehow look similar to streets in other similar size cities, and I didn't really feel inspired to photograph them. Many usual small shops, then an intersection, some larger buldings and a shopping place. I am sure staying longer I would find something, but then, you just can't see and do everything. There are so many other places waiting for me to explore, and way more exotic.

Photo: Kuantan, Malaysia. Of course, this is Malaysia, so there wouldn't be a place without a masjid - a mosque that is. This one is pretty big, and there is a clink next to it.

Photo: Kuantan, Malaysia. Actually, I like this one. Soft pastel colors and the play of blue and white against the blue sky. A word 'heavenly' comes to mind.

Photo: Kuantan, Malaysia. And another. I like how the minarets frame the empty sky, giving it volume, and the dome seems almost rising.

Photo: Kuantan, Malaysia. Now, to change the subject, a couple of old boats which I saw walking along the river.

Photo: Kuantan, Malaysia. Small Chinese buildings with many small stores.

Photo: Kuantan, Malaysia. These three building caught my attention. The one on the left was built in 1939, the middle one in 1940, and the last one in 1941. It also seems like there is more ornament there when you look from left to right. I guess the owner prospered and was getting happy.

So, this was my two days in Kuantan. I coudn't find a room at the places suggested in the Lonely Planet guide, but as usually, I found my own good deal. I stayed at the Citilite Hotel on E31 Jalan Dato'Wong Ah Jang, 25100 Kuantan. I paid 25 Ringgit for a single room with fan, plus they have free WiFi access! :)

My life has always been about freedom and I shall continue to walk this path.
Safe travels ! ........... Stan
