PART 3: Back on the road - South East Asia.
Route Map Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand » October 01, 2010 Continuing my visit at the Wat Phra Mahathat. Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. First I walked around the main chedi, surrounded by the many smaller ones. Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. I wasn't there alone of course. Besides the many visitors, there are always monks be be found somewhere around. Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. I climbed one of a smaller buildings and took a few birds-eye view photos of the temple. Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. I followed one of the monks and took a couple of good pictures of him. Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. He turned around the corner and wend to another section of the temple. Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. There is a place between the chedi where people lit up incenses and pray. Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. A close up of them. Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. I also spotted one woman in a wheelchair. She stopped at the entrance and prayed there. Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. I climbed down from my 'observation tower' and went closer to look at the praying people. Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. This is the head of the animal from the long pot like thing in the picture above where people put the incense. It's covered with gold leaf, so it has to have a significant place in the religion. Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. A look inside the ground floor of the main chedi. Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. There are boxes for coins and a golden Buddha next to each of them. Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. I will explore the chedi later. First a walk around the temple and a look inside the surrounding it building. I is square in shape with no doors. Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. Walking around... Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. Dragon motive on the roof. Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. The first look at the main chedi. Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. There was a private ceremony being done by monks for a Thai family. I stayed away not to disturb them, and took this photos with my camera's handy zoom. Photo: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. Exploring the square building I discovered these preserved bones of a whale. It turns out ti was a Bryde's whale, Balaenoptera edeni. It was found dead on the beach of Tha Sung river mouth, Amphoe Tha Sala, in Nakhon Si Thammarat in November 1919. So it's pretty old. It was brought to the temple for display. Next I went to climb the main chedi and what's inside. The story continues on the next page. My life has always been about freedom and I shall continue to walk this path. Safe travels ! ...........
