PART 3: Back on the road - South East Asia.
Palau Perhentian, Malaysia » August 20, 2010 Tonight cloudy in the evening, and later rain. The scenery became a bit dramatic. I like that. It also brought fresh cool air. A view from the Coral Bay on Perhentian Kecil. In some way Palau Perhentian reminds me of Bocas del Toro in Panama. I spent there some time in Bastimientos and Bocas del Toro itself. The boat from Kuala Besut cost 70 ringgit, return. It takes about 30 minutes to get there. I am on the smaller island, Perhentian Kecil, at the Coral Bay. The Long Beach, on the other side of the island, can be reached in 10 minutes on foot. It's just past 10 in the morning - time to walk around, take the first photos, book the dives. I slept in a dorm with air-conditioning, but it was OK. I am going to give diving a shot. Oh, and it's expensive here by the way. Especially during the season. I haven't been lucky this way. The dorm is 30 Ringgit, and I was paying 20 to 25 for my private room. The island is different from what the Lonely Planet describes, and there is plenty of internet now. One of the good things about the place where I am staying is that they have free high speed WiFi, so I am able to write and post this update. The place where I am staying, Shari-La, is more like a resort complex. They have two dorms, and the rest are cabins for couples and families. I will post some photos later, but now I am off to search for a dive shop. 14:30. Early afternoon and after lunch. I found a dive shop and booked dives. There are three top dives here: the Temple, sugar cane wreck and T3. They are further away than the other sites and they cost 80 Ringgit each. Shore dives are 50 - 65 Ringgit. I will do an 8:30 am dive and then one in the afternoon. They also have snorkeling tours for 30 Ringgit. You go to five or six different locations and as a promotion you will also get a free buffet breakfast worth 15 Ringgit. Not a bad deal. I should have done it this morning... Oh well, today a relaxing day and tomorrow the dives. Hopefully my ears will function properly and there will be no problem with equalizing. I will go snorkeling on my last day here. The boats are pretty fast and it takes 25 - 30 minutes to get to the island. You have to ask the driver where to drop you off, and I aksed for the Coral Bay. Photo: Kuala Besut, Malaysia. Right after arrival I had a snack at the restaurant on the left. On the far right is the dive shop where I booked the dives. Photo: Palau Perhentian, Malaysia. A view of the Coral Bay. Except for the two main beaches with chalets and restaurants, and a few small beaches, the interior of the island is pretty much jungle. This is a new path they are making - I don't know where to, but I might go for a walk here tomorrow. Photo: Palau Perhentian, Malaysia. The trees are green here, and the water is pretty blue. I must say that it seemed more crystal like and turquoise in Honduras, on the Roatan Islands, but apparently when you go further to the dive sites the visibility is incredible. I will see tomorrow. But even close to the shore snorkeling is good and there are plenty of fish. Photo: Palau Perhentian, Malaysia. Tomorrow I will go diving somewhere close to those small islands. The other dive will be to a wreck of a sugar cane cargo ship - an old wooden ship built also from bamboo. Apparently very well preserved and you can swim inside it. Should be fun! It's really too bad I don't have a camera to take photos underwater... Anyone wants to give me a present? Canon G11 with underwater housing will do just perfect ;) My life has always been about freedom and I shall continue to walk this path. Safe travels ! ...........
