PART 1: Escape from Vancouver freeze & the Mexico couch surfing experiment - Dec. 13 - Jan. 9 2010
San Diego, USA - December 14, 2009 Today I went to the Balboa Park. The day was sunny, I got tanned a little and I could just walk in a T-shirt ! It was fantastic. I also went to see the Convention Center and all the way downtown to the historic part of San Diego. It is too bad that I can't stay here longer, but Mexico is waiting and I will be here again on my way back. Tomorrow I will walk to Tijuana. Photo: Trolly to Ysidro, San Diego - for $2.50 it will take you to the border with Mexico, then you just walk across the bridge between the two countries Bellingham, USA - December 13, 2009 I arrived in Bellingham for my flight. After a mile walk in snow, because there were no buses to the airport on Sunday, finally I am standing at the airline counter. Photo: Bellingham - To get to the airport you have to walk to the right for another 10 - 15 minutes Photo: Bellingham - On the way to the airport I must say that yet again, the border crossing was a bad experience. What happened to the North America ? Europeans unite and open their borders, but this continent of three only countries can't get along ? The border people made a fuss asking question you would expect to hear from a social worker. I was told that I need to have 200 - 300 dollars a day (!!) to visit the US. I think they are picking on random tourists and that's all. It used to be that you drove your car, flashed your drivers licence without stopping and you were in another country. At the end I was given a paper letting me stay in the US for two nights only and I had to pay 6 dollars for it. First they complain about not enough money, then they make you pay some stupid fee and let you in. I wanted to stay for three nights in San Diego, but I had to bargain to get two - which becomes one day only since my plane arrives in the evening. What difference does it make ? They let me in, so obviously they are not afraid that I am a thread, and if I was going to stay illegally - what sense does it make to limit my stay to a day ? Especially having my plane ticket to go back and forth, all paid for. There are many nice people living in the USA and it is very unfortunate that the public officials here give them and the country a bad name. If anything, there is no trace of hospitality or welcome feeling at the land border between British Columbia and Washington. The important thing is that I got through and I will be on my way South in less then an hour. Life goes on, and there are more important battles to face and win. My life has always been about freedom and I shall continue to walk this path. Safe travels ! ........... Stan Check out my Photography Portfolio |
