Ancient Nomad
PART 3: Back on the road - South East Asia.

flag   Route Map    Boat trip: Battambang to Siem Reap, Cambodia   »  January 03, 2011

Continuing my boat trip to Siem Reap (the beginning) - after a few hours through the narrow passages of the Sangkor River, we reached a wider area. We are on our way to the Tonle Sap Lake, where after disembarking there will be another 14 kilometers tuk tuk ride to Siem Reap.

Photo:  Boat trip: Battambang to Siem Reap, Cambodia → It almost looks like a lake, but it's still the river. It's 13:30 and we still have some time to go. For a moment I thought it's the Tonle Sap Lake, but not, not quiet yet. The lake has to be bigger.

Boat trip: Battambang to Siem Reap - Cambodia

Photo:  Boat trip: Battambang to Siem Reap, Cambodia → It seems like we are about to see yet another floating village. It seems like the close to Siem Reap we get the houses look a bit better. Let's see this one.

Photo:  Boat trip: Battambang to Siem Reap, Cambodia → Indeed, a real floating village. Perhaps the biggest so far.

Boat trip: Battambang to Siem Reap - Cambodia

Photo:  Boat trip: Battambang to Siem Reap, Cambodia → I always liked the idea of living on the water. At one point, years ago, I even thought of selling my car and buying a boat instead. I like the idea of being able to move around instead of being stuck in one place. There are people living in floating houses in Canada. I have seen many in Victoria, BC. Some very nice houses. I wonder what is the cost of haveing it 'parked', but I would imagine they don't have to pay any property tax since they don't have to buy land. And the land is what's so expensive - the house itself cost a fraction.

Photo:  Boat trip: Battambang to Siem Reap, Cambodia → Of course I'd like to have a bit better house than this. I still like the modern touch. But even this would be a great summer house! Live on a river, go fishing. I'd still need my internet access ;)

Boat trip: Battambang to Siem Reap - Cambodia

Photo:  Boat trip: Battambang to Siem Reap, Cambodia → Not all buildings or houses in this floating village are on water. This village is a bigger one, and has many structures, like the one in the background, standing on dry land. This probably changes though as the water levels rise during the rainy season.

Photo:  Boat trip: Battambang to Siem Reap, Cambodia → A floating house, a house standing on land and a boat - all three elements of a flaoting village. Plus people of course!

Boat trip: Battambang to Siem Reap - Cambodia

Photo:  Boat trip: Battambang to Siem Reap, Cambodia → There was even a temple in this village. I wonder if in monsoon season people can come up to it directly in their boats. It would be really interesting to see how this place changes. It would be a totally different landscape.
