Ensenada, Mexico - December 29, 2009
It seems like the conversation about the couch for last night went nowhere. I was calling the person and nobody was picking the phone up. They also didn't answer to my emails. So I went to a hotel instead, and today I am going to stay at the hotel as well. It is not such a bad option - except for the fact that I will have to pay for it, and I could be using the money for something else - like ceviche!
The hotel is basic but clean and all right. A big room, a big comfortable bed, private bath with hot shower and I asked for no TV. I am paying 150 Pesos per night, which is about 12 dollars. Not bad. I paid 10 dollars for a dorm bed in Mexico City two years ago.
So it seems like couch surfing might not always work. I think it is still a very fine way of traveling, sleeping for free and meeting people. But you should always have a back-up plan. Right now the time is very difficult. Holidays, and the New Year, are always something like a 'must-to-party-or-if-not-I-will-die' time for young people, and majority of couch surfer are in their early twenties. I am not surprised that it might be difficult to find a place at this time, specially on a short notice. I also think that many people planned ahead this part of the year and made couch surfing arrangements already some time ago. I am sort of like an oddball here, in many terms.
In the meantime, by all means, I am enjoying myself in other ways. I took a bus North through the city and had a chance to see a bit more than the downtown. Still, the touristy area by the water is fine with me. Sitting in the sun, snapping some photos is a great pastime. I will be in Canada in just over a week, and I will not be able to do that.
