Ancient Nomad
PART 5: Winter break

flag   Route Map    Masaya, Nicaragua   »  December 06, 2012

I have been in Masaya for two weeks. Long time. I will be leaving soon. In the meantime, a couple of photos of the local cusine.

Masaya - Nicaragua

Photo:  Masaya, Nicaragua → I have been talking a stroll on the malecon almost every day. A couple days ago I snapped this photo of Laguna de Masaya, and I like it, so here it is to share.

Masaya - Nicaragua

Photo:  Masaya, Nicaragua → The views of Laguna de Masaya always inspire me to try something new. I went to the Mercado Municipal and had this sopa de mariscos for 90 Cordobas. It had a lobster, a whole fish, a couple of different crabs, and one turtle egg. I took the photo before eating it not knowing that the soup has all those different ingredients - they were all hiding beneath the surface. It would had been better for the presentation to see them, but it's alright. Not so important. The soup was mainly about the lobster for me. The juicy lobster tail tasted superb! I like it done this way much better than fried. But the best in this soupa was the broth. Super tasty, probably the richest tasting seafood soup I have ever had.

Masaya - Nicaragua

Photo:  Masaya, Nicaragua → Another day comida typica: rice and beans, b-b-q pork, and platan maduro. 60 Cordobas ($2.50). As you can see, even eating out can be quite cheap in Nicaragua, and if you also buy some fruits to snack for breakfast, it's possible to eat healthy for about 100 dollars a month. Of course, if you buy the stuff at the market and cook yourself, it is possible to eat for about 50 dollars a month.

Masaya - Nicaragua

Photo:  Masaya, Nicaragua → The last new thing which I have tried was another typical Nica food - baho.

Masaya - Nicaragua

Photo:  Masaya, Nicaragua → Baho is yuka and some other similar root, plus tomato, then a kind of mushy vegetable sausage with tomatoe taste, and a piece of delicious tender meat (beef I think). All cooked and wrapped in banana leaf. I really liked it. Also 60 Cordobas.

Sitting at the Parque Central and having my coffee, I just talked to one lady at the next table. She said she has a couple of rooms at her house for rent. Clean, comfortable bed. She said the rooms is 800 Cordobas a month. I am paying now 100 Cordobas a night at my hotel. That's 3000 a month. Something to think about if I come to Nicaragua next time, I have her contact. Just like I said it to many people before - if you want to save money, go and live in an exotic country, travel for a long time.
