PART 5: Winter break
![]() ![]() San Carlos, 7:50. I am boarding a panga to El Castillo. It's a slow ride. Tere are two boat services to San Juan del Nicaragua, which is also called San Juan del Norte. Another name is Greytown. I think these were two merged into one settlings. ![]() Photo: El Castillo, Nicaragua → Boarding the panga. ![]() Photo: El Castillo, Nicaragua → All ready to go. ![]() Photo: El Castillo, Nicaragua → And we are moving! It will be about two and a half hours to El Castillo. ![]() Photo: El Castillo, Nicaragua → I wouldn't say the boat ride is very exciting in comparison to let's say Mekong in Vietnam and Cambodia, or other boat trips in South East Asia. But it's OK. ![]() Photo: El Castillo, Nicaragua → There pass some dwellings along the way. ![]() Photo: San Carlos, Nicaragua → The far right end, a woman doing loundry. ![]() Photo: El Castillo, Nicaragua → An occasional boat. ![]() Photo: El Castillo, Nicaragua → There were many stops on the way, dropping people off in seemingly middle of nowhere. Also, the military check points. Too many of them. During one stop I snapped this photos of plants living on a tree. There is an amazing variety of parasitic plants growing on trees, and they seem to hetting along well, without any bad effects on the host. ![]() Photo: El Castillo, Nicaragua → A local with a bunch of belts and other stuff for sale. Nicas with wads of belts, hammocks, watches, sunglasses and wahtever they can carry for sale are a quite common sight in parks, boats and buses. ![]() Photo: Boca de Sabalos, Nicaragua → We went into a smaller river to our major stop before El Castillo - the capital of the area, Boca de Sabalos. ![]() Photo: Boca de Sabalos, Nicaragua → The pier at Boca de Sabalos. ![]() Photo: Boca de Sabalos, Nicaragua → A short stop, and we are moving again. ![]() Photo: Boca de Sabalos, Nicaragua → Full throttle on Rio San Juan. ![]() Photo: Boca de Sabalos, Nicaragua → Half an hour and we are arriving at El Castillo. ![]() Photo: El Castillo, Nicaragua → The first photo of 'el castillo' - the fortress build by the Spanish to stop the French and Dutch pirates. ![]() Photo: El Castillo, Nicaragua → Here we are - the panga pier at El Castillo.
