Ancient Nomad
PART 5: Winter break

flag   Route Map    San Carlos, Nicaragua   »  December 14, 2012

5:40 am. I slept through the short stops at Morrito and San Miguelito, as expected, and now we are approaching San Carlos.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → Still a bit sleepy, but actually it wasn't a bad ride. I slept on a cushioned bench, which was actually much better than many of the hotel beds I have slept in.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → Almost there. Houses build on stilts, as usually in any river side towns.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → As I found out, they are collectiong the tickets when you leave the boat, so I quickly snapped this photos of mine for the memory.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → The view from the porch of my hotel. The central park is up this road, just a two minute walk. San Carlos is not a big town, you can easily see all of it on foot in half an hour.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → This is the view to the left.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → This to the right.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → And this is my room. Very simple, but at least it has a window. Some rooms don't have a window at all, and feel like a solitary compartment. But they are cheap. I sleep at night, I don't hang around my room almost at all, so I don't need anything fancy.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → The colorful central park.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → The quite modern looking church.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → One of the streets in San Carlos. They all look similar.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → This street ends at the lake, closer to the far right end.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → Closer to the left. Quite an open and spacious area. Not just in Nicaragua, the machete is quite a common sight and the local carry them openly on the streets and buses. They use it for cuttung grass and bushes.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → Now closer to the lake, looking to the right.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → From the same spot, to the left. You can see the pier for the Granada to San Carlos boats.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → There is this floating sculpture of an indegenious person about in the middle of the malekon. It's hard to see it here, but he is standing on a turtle. The people on the boat are bringing some sort of a plant, I don't know what it is but it seems it comes from the lake.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → These people were unloading their daily catch of fish. Lots of people here live from fishing.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → The name of this fish is mujarra.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → White heron is quite a common bird here.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → I love this bird. It's called Garuda and it makes so many distinctive noises and whistles making it appear like the are coming from completely different bird species. They are very agile and I love their sharp curious eyes. A bird with lots of personality.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → Wow, Jennifer Lopez, the famous J-Lo singer, has a butique in Nicargua! Oh yeah.. that's right, I am sure there are many Jennifer Lopez in Latin America, hahaha

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → One of the many poor and typical to rural Central America houses.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → Drying loundry Nicaraguan style.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → Just a San Carlos street scene.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → There is a hill from which it's possible to snap a few panorama photos of the city. Here, the parque central with the church.

San Carlos - Nicaragua

Photo:  San Carlos, Nicaragua → This overlooks the not visible here port.

San Carlos seems to be a rural, somewhat laid back river town and the gateway to the Carribean coast and pangas going to the islands on Lago Nicaragua. It seems uneventful right now, there is not much to see here. Maybe during the holidays things start to move, but I am not going to find that out. Tomorrow I will be leaving at 8 am for San Castillo, a small village about two and a half hours on Rio San Juan on the way to San Juan del Nicaragua, or Greytown as it is also called.
